An old Italian gentleman lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:
在新泽西州住着一个年迈的意大利绅士。他想要在他的蕃茄园内种植，但因着土壤太硬，对他来说实在不可能。过去的日子，都是文森（他的独生子）帮助他，但如今文森却身在牢狱。老绅士写了一封信给他的儿子，并描述了他的困境：

Dear Vincent,

I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.

Papa

亲爱的文森，

我想，今年我无法在蕃茄园种植了，这让我感到心痛。我年纪太大，无法在园里挖掘。如果你在这儿，这问题就好办了。我知道你总是那么乐意为我挖掘松土，就像过去的日子那样。

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Papa,

Don’t dig up that garden. That’s where the bodies are buried.

At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left.
That same day the old man received another letter from his son.
翌日临晨4时，只见联邦调查局人员及警员来到蕃茄园，将整片土地都进行挖掘，却没有找到任何尸首。他们向老绅士道歉后即无功而返。
就在当天，儿子又寄了另一封信给老绅士：

Dear Papa,

Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now.
That’s the best I could do under the circumstances.

Vinnie

亲爱的父亲，

快去种植番茄吧。
在这样的情况下，这是我能为您所作最好的。
